AI Investment Remains in Focus After Strong Earnings

The market is wrapping up a strong earnings season, with AI investment remaining a major driver of growth and investor attention. Big Tech companies continue to spend heavily on data centers and AI infrastructure, but investors are increasingly focused on whether that spending is generating sufficient returns. Alphabet recently faced a sharp selloff after signaling higher capital expenditures, while Microsoft and Amazon rallied as strong cloud growth helped justify their investment plans. Looking ahead, markets will be watching whether revenue and profits can keep pace with AI spending and whether the benefits of AI spread beyond technology into industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, and financial services.

Nvidia Taps Wall Street to Fund AI Infrastructure

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is pushing a new model for financing the AI infrastructure boom, with Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, Blackstone, KKR, Apollo and Brookfield saying they are prepared to raise more than $500 billion from institutional investors to fund data centers and AI computing infrastructure. The idea is to treat AI systems as revenue-generating assets that can be financed and securitized, potentially shifting more of the funding burden away from technology companies’ balance sheets. Nvidia could also backstop up to 25% of certain loans, which may help borrowers secure more favorable financing. While the initiative could unlock significant new capital for the AI build-out, executives acknowledged that excess investment and pullbacks are likely as the market develops.

Inflation Cools Slightly in July

U.S. consumer prices rose 0.1% month-over-month in July, while core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.2% for the month, both in line with expectations. On a year-over-year basis, headline inflation eased to 3.4%, and core inflation declined to 2.5%, each slightly lower than in June. Energy prices fell for a second consecutive month, while food and shelter costs posted modest increases. The report suggests that inflation pressures have moderated following stronger price increases earlier in the year, although overall inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Combined with recent signs of weakness in the labor market, the data reduced market expectations for a September interest rate increase, with investors now placing greater odds on the Fed holding rates steady at its next meeting.

🏢 Corporate Earnings

  • Cisco Systems (CSCO) beat fiscal Q4 expectations, reporting adjusted earnings per share of $1.22 on revenue of nearly $17.3 billion compared with estimates of $1.17 per share and $16.8 billion, as the company continues to benefit from strong artificial intelligence infrastructure demand.
